What’s happening in Park City, Utah, shows why local control over elections matters. It also shows that supporters of ranked choice voting face challenges even in places that have otherwise been friendly to it. Even after the city council voted to use ranked choice voting (RCV) for 2025, a few members are now pushing to undo it based on new claims about voting software, even though election experts and officials say the system is reliable and accurate. It is a familiar pattern: when voters are given better choices, some try to reverse it by raising doubts that do not hold up.
Here in Georgia, BBGA fought off a bill last session that would have banned RCV statewide. Our goal is to make sure cities and counties can decide for themselves whether to use RCV, instead of having that decision made for them at the state level. During the fight at the Capitol, we saw the same kinds of distortions used to try to shut down any discussion about giving voters a greater voice.
Misinformation should not decide how elections are run; voters should. BBGA is committed to standing up for facts and giving Georgia communities the freedom to choose better elections when they are ready.
